FRAG LAN :: What To Bring
What to bring PDF Print E-mail

Many people, especially those who have never attended a LAN before, are unsure what to bring along, so here's a quick list:

  • Your computer. It should be at least 2.5GHz with 512MB RAM (1GB recommended) and a GeForce 6 series graphics card (or whatever the ATI equivalent of that is).
  • A monitor, so you can see what you're playing, and also have visual confirmation of any Blue Screens of Death.
  • Keyboard and mouse. We strongly suggest that you bring a mouse pad to the event as well (optical mice and shiny tables tend not to be the best of friends).
  • Power cable (preferably a split power cable). This may seem obvious, but Ron put this in as he has a nasty habit of realising that he's left his power cable at home when he's halfway down Field's Hill.
  • A multiplug, although you shouldn't need to use it, bring it with just in case. If there is a situation where you need to use it, please bring it to the admin's desk first so we can test it.
  • Headphones, so that you can hear your game. Please don't bring speakers, as people like to hear their own games, and not everyone else's. See The Rules section for info on what could happen if you bring your speakers.
  • Anti-virus and firewall software installed on your PC, as the person next to you scanning the network may not have your best intentions in mind (although he'll probably get kicked out for that...)
  • Driver CDs and a Windows CD, in case your machine blows up in your face and you need to reformat and reinstall.
  • A screwdriver, in case lugging your computer halfway across town caused something to work itself loose and you need to open your PC up to fix stuff.
  • Games to play. :)
  • Money for the entrance fee, food, and some petrol to get you back home.
  • A sleeping bag, pillow, inflatable mattress and teddy bear if you're staying the night. If you are using the accommodation for the Showcase event, please remember to bring a padlock along as well.
  • Any medication that you're on, particularly if you're staying for more than one day.
  • A list of excuses for getting nailed by the gauntlet while having a BFG.

NOTE: FOR THE SHOWCASE EVENT - NO SLEEPING IN THE LAN AREA IS ALLOWED - SPACE RESTRICTIONS WILL NOT ALLOW IT - IF YOU NEED TO SLEEP AT YOUR DESK, YOU ARE WELCOME TO DO SO IN YOUR CHAIR WITH YOUR KEYBOARD AS YOUR PILLOW - THERE WILL BE A CHILL-OUT / SLEEP AREA LESS THAN 50M AWAY FROM THE VENUE AS WELL AS ACCOMMODATION IN THE STUDENT ROOMS WHICH YOU CAN HIRE - PLEASE SPEAK TO AN ADMIN IF YOU WISH TO PAY FOR ACCOMMODATION
